How to Speak Up – The Power of Communication

One thing I learned during the pandemic is that communication is essential.

If you are isolated because of COVID-19, you will never get your basic needs if you will not inform the people around you.

If you need medications and don’t know what to take, you will never get treatment without calling your physician.

If you are stressed and worried about uncertainties, you will never get peace of mind if you don’t communicate or share.

We all have a void to fill in, and we can never address them without speaking up.

But why do people find it difficult to speak up?

The truth is that what we are avoiding isn’t speaking up, but rather the stress associated with it.

For some people, speaking up means we need to admit that we cannot do it alone, that we are vulnerable, and that we are having a hard time.

Others associate this with defeat, and they are not willing to give up their ego or pride.

While for some, they associate it to fear of being rejected or ignored.

So how do we help ourselves?

Here is the 3-A’s that will help you start communicating.

  1. Awareness

It isn’t easy to understand what’s going on ourselves if we are unaware of what we are dealing with. Good communication starts within us. It will be easy to communicate if we know what we want, what we are afraid of, and what we need.

Find time to assess what you are going through and see what you need to address the most. It will be helpful if you are honest with yourself.

  1. Action

There is no other way to get help without taking one brave action. You play an essential role in your life, and you have a choice in your next move. If you don’t reach out to people, they will never understand you.

  1. Affirmation

If you are up for the challenge, remember to recognize your action steps. No matter how small or big your wins are, don’t be rude to yourself! Start praising and affirming the actions you’ve done to help yourself. You deserve praise!

Dealing with our feelings, digesting our truth, and embracing the person we became this pandemic is a lot to take but remember, we don’t have to deal with this alone. We have control over the steps we will take.

We will never know unless we speak up.
